Constructing a Home Based Business

What is the first step in the process in the construction of a new home, office, or other building?

If you said "Lay the foundation", you're thinking along the right lines but not quite right. The first step in the construction process is almost always a clearing. If you look at the construction in your neighborhood, what is the very first thing they do (after obtaining a permit of course)? They demolish the old building that's there and then spend some time clearing away the debris. Or even if there is no existing building, they'll have to spend some time grading and removing shrubbery and other debris before beginning the foundation process.

Such is the case with building a home based business. People often start a home based business after having a job for many years. Maybe you didn't like your job and wanted to strike out on your own? Or maybe you were forced out of your job by economic factors and like the idea of working your own business from home?

Making the transition from a situation where you had a job and received a steady paycheck to a genuine home based business requires a change in mindset on your part. Like the construction process, it requires a clearing out of old ideas.

The idea of relying on someone else to tell you what to do is one thing that needs clearing. Another thing that needs clearing is the concept of an 8 hour day and a 40 hour week. A real home based business will take work to build and you may end up spending more hours per week building your business that you did working on your job. This is normal, but you need to be prepared for that.

Another thing that is beneficial to clear out is the concept of a single source of income - like you might have had with a paycheck. In building your home based business, keep an open mind to other sources of income and ways that you can branch out your business.

So building a home based business is much like building a house. Before you even lay the foundation (create the business plan) and get the permit (get the business license), it's a good idea to begin clearing old "employee" concepts and dependencies. From now on, you're the boss!
